The International Mineralogical Association (IMA) categorizes new minerals found each year. In 2018, some new classified minerals included Camanchacaite, Eddavidite, and Stefanweissite. But one stone that stood out was Carmeltazite discovered in northern Israel. It was designated a rare mineral by the IMA.
Introducing the newest gemstone – Carmeltazite
As per the website – mine, Carmeltazite is a rare and precious gemstone that is typically black, blue-green, and orange-brown. It is known for its unique and beautiful appearance, making it a popular choice for use in jewelry. Carmeltazite is relatively new to the market but quickly becoming a favorite among gemstone collectors and enthusiasts.
Carmeltazite: Marketed as Carmel Sapphire
Carmeltazite was discovered in Israel by exploration company Shefa Yamim. The stone is said to be very high quality and marketed as the Carmel Sapphire. Shefa Yamim hopes to tap into the global gemstone market with this discovery. The stone is a rare and beautiful mineral made of titanium, aluminium, and zirconium. It also contains traces of scandium, calcium, and magnesium and has a complex crystalline structure.
Is Carmel Sapphire similar to Sapphire?

During mining in volcanic rock, the mineral was found embedded in Sapphire. It has been classified as a rare type of Sapphire that is only found in the volcanic rocks in Mount Carmel, and the Kishon Mid Reach in Northern Israel. Carmeltazite, which is now being marketed as Carmel Sapphire, is similar in appearance and chemical composition to Ruby and Sapphire. However, it is unlike any other sapphire found in the world. The mineral has otherwise only been identified in outer space. It’s a unique find, one of the only gemstones ever found in an asteroid.
